Discussion: Alcohol and the NHS

Alcohol related problems are the biggest cost for the NHS. Alcohol-related harm costs each taxpayer an average of £1,000 a year. Do you think putting the cost of alcohol up will reduce binge drinking and alcohol abuse?

  1. I believe if a person wants to drink alcohol they will no matter what the cost. Even if they resort to being a thief and just taking it from a shop.
So if the price of alcohol rises i dont believe it will effect binge drinkers as they will still get the alcohol they want!

  2. i dont think it will reduce binge driniking because if the person is an alcoholic they dont care about the price of the drink they will still buy it.

  4. Personally i believe that if a person is a binge drinker they will pay the price or submit to crime in order to get the money to be able to afford it. I also believe that crime will be a bigger problem due to people not being able to afford the alcohol.

  5. I don't think that putting up the cost of alcohol will reduce binge drinking. But i don't see why people who work should pay taxes to pay for binge drinkers treatment in a hospital. They put themselves there, therefore they should suffer. I don't see that this is right when they get more attention because they decide they want to spend their day drinking, and when they get alcohol poisoning, they should suffer with it. I think the money should go on something more serious, such as cancer, as people don't do something to give them cancer, therefore this should be where the money is put, rather than people who drink themselves to a horrible state. Serves them right!!

  6. i think by increasing the price of alcohol will not reduce binge drinking , a person who drinks will not think about the cost of the alcohol they will still find ways to pay .
