Discussion: Eastenders ‘cot death storyline’ gets thousands of complaints

The EastEnders cot death storyline is to be brought to an early end after more than 8,400 complaints to the BBC.
The story of Ronnie Branning swapping her dead child for another baby drew criticism from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Sids) awareness campaigners. They claim that the plot was used simply to increase ratings on a highly sensitive topic. Others have said however, that it has increased awareness about Sids.
What do you think?

  1. i think that this has increased the awareness about cot deaths. On the other hand this may have caused stress for some people. This is a very sensitive topic because lots of people have been through hard situations like this, that is why lots of people have complained against this.

  2. I think that cot death is a serious situation and parents need to be aware of this but when eastenders swapped the babies i thought that it was wrong because parents who have lost their babies due to cot death should have to see something as extreme as this maybe eastenders could of considered a different story line than swapping the babies.

  3. I think that the public have taken a STORYLINE far too seriously and yes people have been through things such as cot death and illnesses which has lead to the death of their babies but i think it is good for this subject to be raised as it is showing awareness and also it is showing ways in which people can get over and deal with things like this. On the other hand the writers off the show did not have to twist the storyline (swapping the babies) as this is probably the part that brought up all the copmp-laints from the publice. Eastenders is ment to be a entertaining soap but not many people will want to watch this specific storyline to TBH. Demi :) <3 Abey :) <3

  4. I Think That Is Was Good That They Had An Issue, Which Mothers No Why. But I Think That They Took They Story Line To Far By Doing The Baby Swap. I Think They Just Did That To Get More Viewings. This May Of Caused Stress And Upset For Some Viewers. Becky Grant

  5. I think that this storyline has increased awareness about the seriousness of 'SIDS', and how badly it affects the families. I don’t believe that it was just to increase ratings by having Ronnie swap her baby because probably in some cases if a parent was in that same situation with another baby the same age and gender across the road that wasn’t being watched, they would do the same, mostly in denial that their real baby has died and all they want is their baby back. Especially for Ronnie and what she has been through.

  6. I think that it is a good thing that this storyline has gone into detail has much as it has, more awareness to cot deaths has been made because of this. Soaps always broadcast true stories so why shouldn't it in this story? (Sixth Form Student)

  7. I believe that this storyline has helped to raise awareness of SIDS as i didn't know what it meant. I think that the storyline may have been taken to offence by many people, but at the end of the day i think that it only shows reality. It happens, if a soap such as Eastenders can raise awareness to those people who don't have much knowledge on it in the first place, then it can be done by them.
It may have upset many people, but no other storyline has cooped up as much fuss, such as corrie and the explosion.
Too much of an issue has been made to thisa storyline.

  8. I believe that this stortyline can work both ways, this is because it is raising awareness of cot death or can also be distressing for the public who have lost a baby due to SIDS. They will have only done this story line because it has happened in real life, and i believe it COULD help some people become more aware and keep a closer eye on their child. However, they didnt have to take the storyline so far that she actually swapped the baby and left Kat and Alfie believing their child had died!

  9. i think that this show has shown awareness of cot death but i dont think this was their main intention. i think this story line was made for the viewing and not foe the actual thought of the babies and parents. i dont see why people are complaining as rape, mental illness and abuse has being shown in the show and this happens to people every day too. if you dont like the story line dont watch the show.
    many thanks lizzzie x

  10. i think that this storyline was a step too far as this is a really sensitive issue with the public , however i think that this story has raised awareness for the audience about SIDS as not many people are aware of this topic.

  11. The storlyine has increased awareness about the 'SIDS' and how it affects people. i think it is a good idea as a drama because it reviews true life stories although some people may find it offensive. as it is a drama, it should bring about teachings for example i dont watc eastenders, i dont even know what is happening but as for now i can tell and now i know about the syndrome that the baby suffered from.

  12. I think that this story line is digusting, i don't think that it has shown how people really suffer when they have lost a child from cot death, as they are mainly showing how ronnie swaped the baby and her feelings. however they do show how Kat is not coping and it finding it very difficult.
This story line is sick and should have never been done in the first place.

  13. I think that the storyline was good to choose, as it shows people what can happen, it could give those who have been through it a better understanding and show them that it does happen and there not alone. However, when i heard that it was going to continue until Christmas 2011, i was shocked, as that would of been very unfair. Also i think the actors & actresses (Kat, Alfie, Ronnie & Jack) have played the parts superbly :)

  14. The story line was very beliverable but howevr it also made me think of how much you need to treat people in your family with reapect and how other people we atke for granted. howevr it was also a very sick story line as it was a erriable account again for ronnie as she has been through a lot of rubbnish LEIGHA ARMITAGE

  17. I think the storyline started off really well and raised more awreness on the cot death issue but then it took it too far when Ronnie swapped babies. I think it is down right upsetting to those who have suffered cot death in rela life.
